The Taliban needs to be stopped, simple and plain, and the greater Islamic world needs to condemn these type of actions and the people who carry them out, my prayers for the family and friends of Gayle Williams. Here is what the Taliban says (Excerpts from this NY Post Article):
"This woman came to Afghanistan to teach Christianity to the people of Afghanistan," militant spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told The Associated Press. "Our (leaders) issued a decree to kill this woman."
The woman was with an aid group called SERVE - Serving Emergency Relief and Vocational Enterprises, her name was Gayle Williams.
"She was a person who always loved the Afghans and was dedicated to serving those who are disabled," SERVE said on its Web site. The group describes itself as a Christian charity registered in Britain. The Web site says it has been working with Afghan refugees since 1980 in Pakistan. "SERVE Afghanistan's purpose is to express God's love and bring hope by serving the people of Afghanistan, especially the needy, as we seek to address personal, social and environmental needs," the site says.
Now get this, on top of this, here is the LAW in Afghanistan (Taliban or US supported Afghanistan):
"Afghanistan is a conservative Islamic nation. Proselytizing is prohibited by law, and other Christian missionaries or charities have faced severe hostility. A member of Afghanistan's highest religious council said Monday that rumors have spread around Afghanistan over the last two years that Westerners have been preaching Christianity to Afghans. "We have heard rumors that houses have been rented to preach Christianity in Kabul and some provinces, but we have no evidence that this is taking place," said council member Jebra Ali.
The council previously made a formal complaint to President Hamid Karzai that Westerners were trying to spread Christianity in Afghanistan. Last year a group of 23 South Korean aid workers from a church group were taken hostage in southern Afghanistan. Two were killed and the rest were released."
Man, this is utterly insane. So we're sending our tax money for people in Afghanistan to be subjected to not just no freedom of religion but no freedom of speech as well? What type of religion will not allow the expression of other ideas and allow people to make their own choice? Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Atheist, whatever a person chooses? We say we are spreading democracy in Afghanistan, but are we really? I'm just saying.
"What type of religion will not allow the expression of other ideas and allow people to make their own choice?"
That is the #1 question for Muslims to answer. It betrays an utter lack of confidence in their views. Christianity can hold its own in the marketplace of ideas. The New Testament teaches nothing about coercing faith. When the rich young ruler walked away sadly, Jesus didn't run after him and tackle him.
Islam just uses fear to silence people - a little like how the MSM seeks to annihilate people like Joe the Plumber who dare to ask questions that the "messiah" may give embarrassing answers to. Don't question things, or you will be next!

I think what people were trying to annihilate with "Joe the Plumber" was this whole concept that $400 Million dollar a year McCain has the pulse of the average American because he remembered one "White Blue Collar" workers from "small town" America's name. BUT thats me ;-)
Seriously though, any religion that has to keep its members by force is a CULT by definition...

Yea, totally sad!

Why do christians continue to go into dangerous countries to convert people who already have a religion?
We all worship the same god so if you're going in to help handicapped people then do that in order to help them, not to convert them to your religion, which is just one out of many in this world.
Not saying it's the woman's fault, but COMMON SENSE people! And show a little respect for other cultures and other religions too - a good way to start is to drop this conversion foolishness.

@Reverse Missonary:
Damn that. I can see if she was FORCING someone to convert, but she wasn't, she can share her faith with whomever she wants, the fact that Islamist in Afghanistan know their religion is full of b/s and afraid of change is their problem.
A good waty to stop it is to WIPE THE TALIBAN OF THE FACE OF THE EARTH and Islamist extremist of the same ilk. Didn't they just stone some woman in Somalia for "adultry" (again no male co-defendent), their religious view is one that hates women, so their religious views should not be tolerated, they should be eliminated. They damn lucky I'm not in command of NATO....

I admit that the Abrahamic religions do not fare well in regards tolerance. I myself would like to see more Hindus and Buddhists and Jains and Parsees, but even then, I don't try to convert Xtians, Muslims or Jews to my relgion. If they ask me about it, I share, and I've had some not conversations. But I'm not a missionary who goes into foriegn countries in the name of "aid" with the aim of conversion.
It's a shame that nice ladies and gentleman like Gayle are being persecuted and even killed. I don't condone it. But what I think it's time for is Christian leaders, including the Catholic Pope, to make unequivocal declarations of respect for all cultures and religions and to condemn any type of pressured conversions. Nobody puts a gun to someone's head and makes them declare "Christ is my saviour", no, they use much more subtle means.
And sometimes not so subtle. The Pope set a goal that by whatever year the goal is for half of India (or was it the entire country) should be made Christian.
Maybe you need to read up on all of this. It's not only fanatical Taliban that's upset. But the rest of us do not resort to killing of course - we are vegetarians!
Been there, done that. I know what I'm talking about.

Sorry, we are just going to agree to disagree. I have no problem with Hindus, Buddhist, Taoist, Muslims, whatever sharing their beliefs in MY CULTURE, as long as it isn't by force. I think religions who get bent out of shape are cowards, afraid of their ideas being challenge, simple as that. If your ideas and philosophies cannot take competing views, they aren't worth having, in my opinion.

Nope. If the law of the land is NO PROSELYTIZING, then that's the law of the land. (BTW, how do we get such a law here?) By all means you may make the choice to proselytize, but presumably do so with an understanding of the risks you take.
We cannot go into other folks countries and tell them what the hell their laws should be. That's absurd. Some of these people come from countries where all manner of fucknuttery is legal. Should we tolerate them coming here, violating our laws and telling us that we should adhere to their standards? Of course not!
Freedom of religion if an AMERICAN right. If other folk choose not to have that right then that's their choice. Other people have the right to run THEIR COUNTRIES as they see fit. If Christians (or other religious groups) can't go to these countries to render aid without proselytizing then stay at home.

@Rosyln:
We have to agree to disagree on this one. Sure, they should be allowed to have any laws they want, MY Tax dollars should not be supporting a government that allows people to be killed for sharing ANY ideas, religious or secular.
Simple as that, MY MONEY should not go to those countries.
A country wants to stone women for adultry, lash women for rapes, kill Christians for "talking about Jesus" (yep, call it prostelyizing, I call it TALKING), whatever barbaric laws they want, sure...just don't send my money to help them prop up those laws...

We invaded their country DJ. It's not like Afghanistan asked us to come over there and 'liberate' them. They were going along perfectly well living as they see fit. We decided to go there and remove the Taliban in an effort to get bin Laden. Pottery Barn rules; you break it, you bought it.
Call it whatever you like, it's illegal, and presumably this woman knew that. If you can't follow the rules of a country, it's probably in your best interests to stay at home.
Posted by: Roslyn Holcomb | 03 December 2008 at 12:02 PM
I understand what you are saying, hell, there are countries that I will never set foot in because of that reason. Not that I intend to "convert" anyone, but all you need is someone to accuse you of that, risk I'm not willing to take.
Afghanistan was backward and broken long before we showed up, and if they like Taliban rule, we can leave and they can have Taliban rule. Of course we won't do that because of our "strategic interest" and all.
My money and our countries sons and daughters were sent there to apprehend or kill Osama Bin Laden (supposedly), so let's do that. BUT obviously Bush and co' had other plans.
I have a fundemental problem when any country allows people to be killed because of their ideas, religious or secular, this woman could have been a disciple of satan, and I still would be pissed that my tax dollars support a government that allows people to be KILLED for choosing to discuss whatever religion they are.
Hopefully under Barack, our military and foreign policy can begin tomake some type of sense.
