The GOP and the Conservative sycophants that trumpet the party (in particular BLACK Neo-Cons) stand quiet once again, when racial slurs and insults come from within.

Russ DePass commented that an escaped gorilla in South Carolina was: "I'm sure it's just one of Michelle's ancestors - probably harmless." to which he offered this attempt at an apology: "I am as sorry as I can be if I offended anyone. The comment was clearly in jest."

Oy Veh, not the "If I offended anyone" inane rambling. IF? You claim to be an educated man Russ, you DID offend quite a few people, and I am sure you know it. Fact is, you continue to exemplify the bigotry and white supremacist mind set of your party. For this reason I don't understand Blacks, no matter how conservative they are, who support people like you and your party. I'm just saying....

Unfortunately, this wasn't the end of his mis-steps. Later in his first apology he made it worse by saying that the First Lady had made a similar comment (assumedly about evolution).

However, he did give a REAL apology yesterday in front of the NAACP. In addition, he sent a formal letter of apology to the first lady.

You should note that Rusty DePass is "a FORMER South Carolina election official and Republican activist" (emphasis added)

And "DePass also says he resigned from his real estate broker job because of the controversy."

The NAACP responded saying that now the healing can begin.

As an SC resident, this has been particularly embarrasing. I'm sure he thought it was funny, now he's realized the impact.

Did you read his apology? You can't get more real than that. Ok, he should have never said it and he should have apologized for it the first time. But at least he got it right the second time. Write him off as stupid.

Seriously, his letter to Mrs. Obama was good. I hope it's sincere. I've never heard of him until this incident, so I have no idea about him.

Come and visit our state, we're not all like that. Yes, we have our embarrasing people, but there's poeple in my family that embarrass me and it's not because they are racist. We have the mountains, the beach and evrything in between. I promise we have something to please everyone. (I may be mistaken, but I believe the first black astronaut was from SC).

If it were just one bigot, that'd be one thing. We all know that not every Republican is a racist, but racists have a home in the GOP all the same and the party leadership isn't doing anything to discourage it.
