Exceptional writting. With the JSA you get a pretty serious story arc, but it does well (especially for trade paperbacks). In this one, Gog of the Third World is here on earth, he creates the new Magog by transforming Lance after he was killed last issue. HERE IS A LINK TO AN EXCERPT OF THE BOOK.
Anyway, let me enumerate my spoilers.
First, on the new "Earth 2" Powergirl has gone to that earth's Mr. Terrific (whose wife is stll alive and who is not an atheist) for help to get back to the mainstream DCU, he agrees to help.
Meanwhile the JSA are testing Magog, noting that his power levels are approaching those of Kingdom Come Superman, and that his staff generates power near the green flame of Alan Scott's Starheart (a play on every kid of the 70's and 80's fantasy of Superman with a power ring). KC Superman tries to talk to Lance about assuming the Magog title, but he doesn't listen and suggest that Supes may just be jealous because he has never done anything on Gog's level to help people.
Then they all get the emergancy call and high tail it over to Africa (where Gog is healing people and killing genocidal soldiers...or turning them into trees as it were), they get there via "boom tube". Of course, an arguement insues as to should they be allowing Gog to "kill people" between Hawkman (who like me, has no problem sometimes killing the bad guys) and Alan Scott (Green Lantern) and Jay Garrick (Flash) who are on the "We never kill" silly side of the argument.
SIDEBAR: O.K., can DC let it go? Some villians gotta die (i.e. Superboy Prime in LEgion of Three Worlds) This is why I can't respect that mythology as much as Marvels, even though I like DC's better, sure, Superman and Co. shouldn't be doing a Frank Castle every issue, but they do have an unrealistic view on heros occasionaly having to off a very bad, bad, villian...just saying...
Back to the review: So back at JSA headquarters Starman is giving this vague cryptic warning, and is afraid now that Gog has cured his mental illness that some telepath might discover his "mission" (maybe we'll get a Legion of three worlds tie -in).
Back in Afica Hawkman fights Alan and Jay, sides form (most of the new kids side with Hawkman and Magog) and basically Magog boom tubes the other side back to JSA headquarters (which would mean Flash and Supes would be back there in a few seconds), BUT then Starman goes all cosmic pain, and Power girl comes out of him as the JLI of Earth 2 pursues! As well, we see flowers making the lightning sign leading Black Adam to Isis (we hope right, could be a set up). Again, great writing, it makes me feel like a kid again waiting for the next issue
