Simply, because they can’t shut us up and less and less are they able to ignore us.
Sure, there is a wide range of political expressions, religious views, social movements, etc., represented in the Black blogsphere; but the thing they all have in common is a new VOICE.
Whereas, post civil rights Black America has often had media pushed and often self serving leadership thrust upon it; telling the world what “We” as Black folk think or want; now, voices contrary to the party line are being heard.
People like Andrew Young, Bob Johnson, groups like the NAACP, and much of the Black clergy are part of the Old Guard, and exemplify the lunacy that the Old Guard represents.
Gina over at “What about our Daughters” is currently forwarding a campaign against advertisers on BET’s raunchy website which is once again putting Black women on the auctioning block. Here is a link to the Sun Times story with details. Anyway, I am sure BET would love for Gina and those of us who support her efforts to be gone.
In times past BET would ignore protest, request for decency, etc., etc., hiding behind their corporate power and implied support from the establishment, not so easy for them to do that anymore. That is the case on a lot of topics regarding the African American community as well as the world in general.
Our voices are being heard; and in many cases, our voices have become agents of change. Hate it or love it, Barak Obama’s campaign has made the Old Guard manifest in a similar way that they do with Black Bloggers.
Basically, Senator Obama is the young kid who should shut up and wait his turn as far as they Old Guard is concerned. The post-Civil rights relics have rallied around the Clinton machine, basically implying and inferring if not out right saying that Bill and Hillary are MORE “Black” than Barak (giving “blackness” the most negative of connotations which just exemplifies the problem even more).
Now, sure, maybe Hillary and Bill have some direct ancestry from the “Black” so-called racial groups of Africa, but should it matter, if Hillary is in FACT the better candidate? Why should she have to out “Black” Barak?
I’ll tell you why, because these civil rights relics and the Old Guard Black establishment can’t just go against the basic hype they have been feeding us over the last 35 years or so. They have said we should support their sorry arses basically without reservation because they share our color and concerns, like we can assume Barak does. So they just can’t be against Barak, they have to try to make Barak less than a Black Man. Labeling him the inexperienced kid, just to neuter him. Which is why, DJ BLACK ADAM endorses and supports Barak Obama (for what its worth being endorsed by the future soverign of Liberia).
Seriously, I am from Chicago, and have never been much of a fan of Barak’s, but he represents in politics what the Black Blogger represent to the Black Media Establishment, a NEW VOICE. A FRESH LOOK, and damn it, I believe that is what this country needs.
I’m just saying…
