I remember going into my local comic book shop one Wednesday afternoon, to have the owner start talking to me about how “great” this story was. I had missed the first miniseries, however he had a set he let me borrow and read (as I was on a Marvel boycott at the time).
So, I read it. The writing was pretty darn good, as was the art, but it just left me a bit unsettled. Now, certain “What If” issues, “Age of Apokolips”, “Onslaught” and heck even the “Infinity Gauntlet” left me unsettled. But that was more of a “I think the Marvel Heroes are barely going to make it”, but with “Marvel Zombies” it was a bit more of a revulsion and general unease.
First, we have a terrified Magneto running away from a bunch of former heroes and villains chasing him, as he began to run out of his power and end up eaten by Col. America (Cap), Punisher, and a few other “zombied out” Marvel heroes and villains as quickly as Shaq would eat a White Castle burger was unexpected. I was like: “If Magneto can’t handle these guys, who can?”
I was hoping that Thor or someone would be immune to this (seeing as he is a Thunder god), but no dice, it seemed like every hero and villain was a zombie! This is the kind of thing that really reminds a comic read of how different the Marvel and DC universes are. Sure, maybe Supes could be turned into a Zombie, but we ALL know Batman already has a serum that reverses the effect of the Zombie virus, and if he didn’t, Darksied would come to earth and “loose” his “Omega Effect” to keep the virus from spreading to Apokolips OR the Guardians would be notified by one of earths MANY Green Lanterns and though the Guardians would be slow to react, Hal Jordan, Ionized Kyle Rayner or even Alan Scott would use their rings to “purge” the earth…or Jakeem Thunder would use the Thunderbolt to change everyone back OR the Spectre would just destroy all the “zombied” out heroes and villains by having them eat themselves, etc., etc., etc.
Well back to Marvel, since they have no Green Lanterns and Nova apparently was infected, though I never saw Quasar…hmm, maybe he got took out later ..anyways, the Silver Surfer comes to town, and though impervious to the virus, he wasn’t quite impervious to the Incredible Hulks BIIIGGGG Bite, that took off his head! So I was like: “DAMN, if they can get the Surfer, this ain’t good!!”, but I was also relieved, since I expected Galactus to come and hand them their arses.
But was I wrong!! Galactus put up a good fight, and had he just consumed the earth or perhaps if he had not been so hungry himself, he might have destroyed the zombies, but weakened and confronted with a device made by Tony Stark, Giant Man and the HATED Reed Richards, he was consumed. In the process many of the villain and some hero zombies got took out. But now you have zombied – power cosmic Iron Man, Giant Man, Wolverine, Spider man, etc. and they head out to space after believing they have eaten everybody (which they did aside from Black Panther and a few of Magneto’s followers).
The last scene of the last book shows these folks heading to some alien world. YUCK. So I read the prequel and saw how this universe got infected, and now the 616 Black Panther, Storm, the Thing and the Human Torch are in this Marvel Zombie universe fighting the zombied Spider Man, Luke Cage, Iron Man, Giant Man and the Hulk as they have just eaten a whole Skrull planet. I have been reading Black Panther (though Reginald Hudlin is on my list since that whole “Hot Ghetto Mess” BET Thing) so now it appears I will be stuck finding out what happens.
Great reading, but truly disturbing comics story!!
